English is one of the most widely used languages in the world.
In fact, even outside a country like the U.S. and the U.K., many people can speak and understand English.
And if you count people who speak English as their second language, there are almost 1 billion people from all over the world who speak English! In addition, 67 countries make English their primary language and there are 27 countries where English is their second language.
How can all this happen? It has to do with history and most importantly the history of the British Empire.
Over the centuries, the British Empire has expanded and colonized many countries, including the newly named and more. In most cases, the British will force the people of their colonies to speak English and some of these countries still speak English, even though it is not their primary language.
For example, how can Irish people learn English and rarely use their native language, Gaelic? Because the British ruled Ireland for several hundred years.
English has a lot of complicated history, but it has a bright future. Because so many people speak English, it helps connect us to the global world. It also helps in your personal and professional life.
